The little red maja tends to be a little heavy handed with the make up. She's always been envious of large eyes and as a result uses make-up to give that look as close as possible. Other make up she only wears when on stage.
Mae is approximately 5'4". She's relatively toned, as her occupation requires, her thighs would be considered 'thick' and her body relatively pear-shaped. She enjoys revealing clothing, finds them comfortable, but for any particular style of dress she's the 'eh whatever' kind. Whatever is comfortable is what she goes out in, period. If that means a bathing suit top and a jean skirt, than that's what that means.
All over her body, Mae has several very distinct burn scars. Most are small, but on her right calf is obviously gnarled flesh almost the entire length of her calf where something substantial occurred.
Mae is nice most days of her life and only rude when the situation is absolutely necessary. Despite being a red maja, she's not really the temperamental kind of gal, but on the same note she's a little destructive. She's self conscious, but not about her body (lack of money for food can do that to a person) but about eyes on her. The only exception to this behavior is the stage. Maeryn enjoys dancing, it's an escape from the hell of her reality and she doesn't see nor hear nor feel the crowd while she does it. The music is like another world she escapes to during her performance (a la Suckerpunch style), and most of her dances with the fire are spontaneous and unrehearsed.
In the real world she's not overly sweet and won't go out of her way to do things for people, but if it's convenient she'll help out, no payback necessary. She's the kind of person someone calls when they need to move in exchange for payment of pizza and beer. Mae is more than happy to lend a helping hand as long as it doesn't phase her. Maeryn's free time is mostly consistent of reading, dancing and playing arm-candy to one of the guild leaders.
Her well takes approximately eight hours once empty to refill. She has complete incapability of accessing her well, even in dire straits, once its completely empty until its refilled.
Generally, Maeryn can manage a fireball as large as a soccer ball, any larger and she's tempting fate and lots of burns. Mae is not immune to burns, but she does have a high tolerance for heat. The heat never bothers her, regardless of how close, which makes it almost impossible for her not to get burned. There just isn't a little voice screaming 'ow hot hot hot' when she plays with fire.
It appears that Maeryn's father had a thing for Talented Korean women. With an unidentified, older, Korean brother, Maeryn was born to Gi Yoon during a rather uneventful winter with mild complication in the heart of Korea. She grew knowing nothing of the second family her father kept, her half-brother and other-wife (though the other-wife had passed away long before Maeryn would have ever had the ability to form conclusions about her). Her father was just always gone at work, she thought, when in fact he was always gone 'taking care' of Maeryn's half-brother. Maeryn was around the age of four when she was uprooted from her native country and brought to America with her mother. They were not in America long before they moved again, to Lochstone Washington where it was ultimately that Gi Yoon and Maeryn lived till now.
They lived in a relatively small domicile in the Slums, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. They had a roof over their head, albeit a tad leaky. Maeryn began school, though the education system was rather lacking.
Eliot Nevin became distant and withdrawn the older Maeryn became. He was always clearly intoxicated, Maeryn's earliest memories are of her father stumbling around angrily screaming at her mother. She was eight when one day Eliot Nevin walked out of the house and never returned. She and her mother always assumed Eliot had just left the family, sick of fighting with Maeryn's mother. It was the way of the Slums, Maeryn had learned, and thought nothing of it. Many children in Southern Lochstone had absentee fathers.
The remainder of her education was rather plain, she was never the smartest girl in class but she passed (as is rather easy for low income districts). Her friend pool was very limited, while she wasn't exactly bullied she was never the target of any real social interaction that had any meaning. She just... existed. Gi Yoon learned broken English has much as she could and worked for the Sa'Kage as a maja, she was very talented and strong in her magic though with very little direction. Gi Yoon was constantly put in harms way during the skirmishes with the Chromeria but it was what allowed the pair of them to survive, and so she continued to do it.
Woe to her mother, it was when she was fourteen that Maeryn discovered her affinity for the Talent. As most Talented, it was an abrupt emotional event. Gi Yoon had returned from a skirmish on the border of Southern Lochstone by the river and had become very injured. She had been left to lay dying on the border between the two fighting powers but was able--with her remaining strength--to text her daughter one last time. She texted in staccato sentences, barely enough to discern real meaning but Maeryn knew where Gi Yoon had been sent. Her mother never had much confidence in the battles. And so Maeryn went searching.
She found her mother, unconscious propped up against a wall in a well known back alley being mugged by several children from the Black Dragon Guild. Just this act sent Maeryn into a rage and flame erupted around her body, scorching her clothing to tattered--but holding--pieces. With no direction, and the fact that being on fire was terrifying, it did not last long but it sufficed in scaring away the child thieves and let Maeryn care for her mother.
Maeryn was thankfully strong enough to support her mother back to their home only a few blocks away where she spent the better part of two months nursing her mother back to health when she could and making money any possible way she could. Maeryn caught on quickly to what she could do, her element having been flame. Her mother discouraged her from letting the Sa'Kage know she was Talented, but they have their methods and Maeryn was quickly oathed at the age of fourteen. She was given a stipend by the Sa'Kage for every 'assignment' she completed, most of which entailed lighting various establishments on fire. As a result of her injury, Gi Yoon became severely agoraphobic.
The newly Talented was successful in nursing her mother back to health but she was gravely injured and unable to return to any battlefield, which meant less money for the two of them. Maeryn finished school, though it took her an extra year and a half to earn the same high school diploma that 'normal' children were allotted. It meant more time to be a little firebug for the Sa'Kage.
It became more difficult to be the firebug the Sa'Kage wanted as she came into her own attractively. She was noticeable wherever she went, regardless of how poorly groomed she was. Maeryn just had a quality, and when she was old enough she was placed into one of the many establishments of West Specter Guild.
Fortunately, since she was Talented, she was treated better than most beholden to that particular guild and was employed as an entertainer with her fire and provocative dress instead of her skin.
Today, Maeryn continues to work as a rather well-renowned fire dancer and pays for her mother's home and comfort with as much as she can afford--often leaving herself low in the financial department.
Little does she know of the turmoil the Sa'Kage is about to stir by revealing her brother to her.
In 2016, Maeryn was tricked into helping a Pale Horse Society assassin murder a man for information. During that encounter, the Shinga revealed that Ji Ki "Alex" Kim was her long lost half-brother she didn't know existed. Ever since, their relationship has been strained. In order to cope, Maeryn quickly turned to alcohol for comfort and has difficulty maintaining appropriate social relationships since.
In May 2017, Maeryn's best friend abruptly disappeared, the High Spectrum White, Dylan Wakeland. After she spent two years helping him find his estranged mother, Maeryn felt abandoned.
She wore limited clothing, as all employees of Fortuna did (or did not). She wore a short leather skirt with a slit all the way up the side, leaving little to the imagination. A leather bralette, bejeweled with fake diamonds and tassels that hung over her abdomen like an unveiling curtain. Maeryn was barefoot with painted-black toenails, she always liked to be barefoot if she could.
The red maja swayed at first, off-beat with the tempo of the song, but as she delved further into the mindset of her dance her hips aligned in tandem. Each beat she switched hips, rolled her shoulders and swayed. Her hair was left to linger at her shoulders; some of the tendrils fell over her eyes colored with bright red contacts. It made for an eerie sight to look into those eyes as she—with a blank stare—lit her lighter and engulfed her gloved hand in flame. It tapered down quickly, but the sudden explosion was impressive.
The ball of flame moved from atop Maeryn’s hand to dance with her, around her body. She twisted and turned and the little ball of flame bounced around her. It spread thinly and engulfed her like a mini tornado as she reached her hands up to the sky and spun in circles to the beat.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
A second flame produced from Maeryn’s finger tips as the temp of the song slowed down some and her winding in tandem became more sexualized. Sweat dripped from her body slowly… but as the heat rose… she didn’t stop.
